Norway Ski and Sail: Lyngen Alps & Finnmark Expedition

Arctic Backcountry Skiing & Splitboarding by Sailboat
This is our fifth year running trips in Arctic Norway and our third year in a row sailing on Sy Jolly. We keep going back because the fjords and islands of Northern Lyngen and Finnmark offer such an incredible juxtaposition of the sea and the mountains. Nowhere else in the world is it so easy to ski from sea level to mountain top. The terrain in Troms and Finnmark Counties lends itself to ski touring; it is no wonder, that Norwegians have such a longstanding ski culture.
We have partnered with Ulrik and Maria of Jolly Good Times Sailing for our ski and sail programs because of their sailing capabilities and their knowledge of the the region and Norwegian culture. Ulrik, a Norwegian is able to offer insights into Norwegian culture through tales of history and culinary dishes he prepares for our guest. Sy Jolly is a comfortable boat designed specifically for operating in the Arctic waters of the Norwegian Sea. It is equipped with drying room for wet gear and an insulated hull so our groups stay warm and dry on our week long voyages. It's quarters are spacious enough that guests are able to relax and get some quite time away from other, be it on deck or in their berth. In the galley, home style meals are served hot and fresh, making it feel like a mobile backcountry hut trip where you're ski in, ski out accommodations transport you to a new venue everyday.
Join Arctos Guides for an unforgettable Ski and Sail trip through Finnmark and the Lyngen Alps. We'll be sailing along Northern Norway’s spectacular coastline between the 69th and 70th parallels, this region offers some of the most dramatic ski touring and splitboarding terrain on the planet—and stands as one of the few places on earth where you can access towering alpine peaks directly from the ocean without bushwhacking or strenuous approaches.
This is fusion ski touring: incredible mountain adventure coupled with a nautical adventure steeped in history and Norwegian culture.
Why Choose a Ski and Sail Expedition in the Lyngen Alps and Finnmark?
The mountains of Northern Norway deliver a completely unique backcountry skiing experience. Because the peaks rise straight out of the Norwegian Sea, they create steep, wild, and incredibly remote objectives.
Utilizing a sailboat as our mobile basecamp grants us ultimate flexibility. It allows our team to adapt seamlessly to changing weather, local snow conditions, and maritime tides as we chart a new zone to explore each day.
What to Expect on an Arctic Ski Touring Journey
Every morning begins with a hearty breakfast prepared aboard the vessel. After a thorough gear check, we load into the zodiac dinghy to make landfall on remote beaches.
- The Daily Ascent: Expect full-day ski tours ranging from 6 to 8 hours of climbing and transitions.
- The Vertical: Objectives feature sustained vertical relief, with peaks scaling anywhere from 750 to 1,800 meters straight from sea level.
- The After-Ski: Back on board, the evening is dedicated to recovery. Enjoy a chef-prepared dinner, relax on deck under the Arctic sky, try your hand at deep-sea fishing, or help sail the boat to our next protected anchorage as we map out tomorrow's lines.
If you are hunting for a premier ski mountaineering / ski touring expedition that masterfully combines marine navigation with world-class alpine descents, this is the ultimate wilderness escape.
