Alpine Climbing & Mountaineering Difficulty Ratings
Alpine Climbing Programs
Beginner Mountaineering Courses & Climbs
- Experience Required: No prior mountaineering experience necessary.
- Fitness Requirements: Excellent physical fitness. You should be comfortable hiking at a sustained pace of 3+ mph (approx. 5 km/h) with a vertical ascent rate of 1,000 feet (approx. 300 meters) per hour while carrying a backpack.
- What to Expect: An introduction to alpine terrain, fundamental movement, and essential mountain safety.
Intermediate Alpine Climbs
- Experience Required: Prior mountaineering, rope work, or backcountry travel experience is required.
- Fitness Requirements: High-level cardiovascular fitness. Ability to maintain a hiking pace of 4 mph or a vertical ascent rate of 1,200–1,500 feet (360–450 meters) per hour.
- Technical Difficulties: * 35° to 55° snow and alpine ice slopes
- 4th class to mid-5th class rock climbing
- Complex, roped glacial terrain navigation
Advanced Mountain Expeditions
- Experience Required: Successful completion of intermediate climbs with Arctos Guides (or equivalent proven competence) and a solid foundation in technical systems.
- Fitness Requirements: Elite mountain fitness. Ability to move efficiently all day at a pace of 4 mph with a continuous vertical ascent rate of 1,500+ feet (450+ meters) per hour under heavy loads.
- Technical Difficulties:
- 45° to 80° steep snow, ice, and mixed terrain
- 4th class to 5.9 technical rock climbing
- Advanced glacier travel, crevasse rescue proficiency, and high-altitude environments



Guided Mountaineering & Alpine Climbing Rates
Experience world-class alpinism with our private custom guiding packages. Our professional, certified guides tailor each itinerary to your skill level and objectives.
- Base Rate: $850 CAD / day (1:1 Private Ratio)
- Extra Guest Fee: $150 CAD per person / day
- Tax: Rates are subject to GST
- Maximum Group Size: 3 guests per guide
Please Note: Final guide-to-guest ratios are highly route-dependent to ensure maximum mountain safety. High-consequence alpine objectives or complex technical routes may incur an additional premium of $400 to $600 CAD.
Physical Fitness
Requires excellent cardiovascular endurance and leg strength to carry a heavy pack uphill for 6 to 12 hours daily on steep, alpine terrain.
